CAPITAL-K QUALIFIER
The Capital K Qualifier Swim is held at Midmar Dam, late November or early December every year.
The race is 1000m and swimmers are expected to complete this within 45 minutes. All Midmar Maniacs Team members may be entered for the Midmar Mile that follows in February.
There are three possible swims at Capital K. The main qualifier race is 1km. For those who feel up to it, there is a 3km race and for the fun of it there is also a 500m race.
Each swim is priced separately and includes a medal.......
MIDMAR MILE
The Midmar Mile is a world-famous event, on par with other well-known events like the Comrades Marathon... only this is in the water!!!
The race is 1,61km (one Mile) and is held over two days. This race must be completed within one hour in order to receive your medal. Disabled swimmers have 90 minutes to get across. There are many different entry categories and includes Team Swims, Company Swims, Individual Swims as well as a Disabled Swim.
As with Capital K, each swimmer carries a personal flotation device and lifeguards keep a watchful eye on all.....
AEROBICS & COACHING
As with the Capital K and Midmar Mile training, the venue is the Browns School Pool.
The coach is Melanie, with a formidable 30 Midmar Miles and 27 Capital K's (Including a number of 3km and 500m swims) to her credit.
Water Aerobics classes are held in the late afternoons and women of all ages are welcome. For disabled folks there is a chair hoist at the pool to help get into and out of the pool.
Melanie also offers stroke correction classes and swimming lessons for adults and children.......
ACCOMODATION FOR CAPITAL-K AND MIDMAR MILE
It is an impossible task to find a place to stay during any of these two events. Most folks leave home at the crack of dawn and make the journey to the dam at some speed, arriving tired and nervous. It is especially demotivating for those who swim on both days.... back and forth to Durban (or wherever you call home) for two days in a row.
THE SOLUTION??
Camping!!! Since 2012 we have had a standing booking at a guest farm, (Aird Farm) about 20mins drive from the dam. Our advance team departs Durban early on Friday morning to set up the campsite at Aird Farm. A marquee tent is erected next to the pool area and electricity is connected. Our swim teams are guaranteed a camping spot within our "area". All that is required is your own tent. Friday night dinner, Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner and Sunday breakfast included...
