Frequently Asked Questions
So you have some questions? Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions
01
How do I Register for Capital K and Midmar Mile?
By registering for swim training on the Midmar Maniacs team. Once registered on the team (and your subs are up to date) you will be coached for the swims on the set training dates and times. There are facilities for special needs and disabled swimmers. Secure gated parking is plentiful and the pool is floodlit after dark.
The Midmar Maniacs admin team handles all the registrations of our swimmers for the two events. Once registration for the swims are opened by the event organisers and we know what the fee is set at, your registration fees will be requested. Should you at that stage feel that you are not ready to compete, you may opt out of the swims. As a matter of course, coach Melanie will inform you if she feels you will not be ready. One may swim Capital K and opt out of swimming Midmar Mile. However, opting out of swimming Capital K disqualifies the swimmer from swimming the Midmar Mile - unless motivated by Melanie (It often happens that a swimmer is not ready to swim Capital K but with the additional training that takes place before the Midmar Mile swim, the swimmer may be passed by Melanie to compete at the Midmar Mile).

What about the Fun Stuff?
Welllllll..... We go camping at a guest farm close to the dam on the weekends of the Capital K and the Midmar Mile swim. Check out the swim and camping overview video. Then, since the last swim of the season is the Midmar Mile... we have a pool party on a Saturday - usually two weeks after the race. The party is at the Browns School Pool and we braai and mess around in the pool. Coach Melanie hands out our certificates and for fun each one gets a "Tongue - in - Cheek" award. Check out the 2018 Capital K and Midmar Mile pics...
03
When are the races held?
Capital K is held on the first weekend of December and Midmar Mile is during the second weekend of February the following year. Bear in mind that the race organisers have the final say on this.
04
What are the costs involved in competing in these events?
Again, the race organisers have the final say in this. One should budget for around R190+ per event.
There is also a gate entry fee payable at the Midmar Dam gate. Some years the fee is charged per car and others it is charged per person. For example, the 2017 Capital K gate fee was set at R 25 per person, whilst the Midmar Mile that followed had a gate fee of R90 per car.

What about Water Aerobics?
Melanie hosts Water Aerobics classes every Wednesday from 5pm to 6:00pm at the Browns School Pool. The classes continue through all the summer months until the water gets too cold (Pool heating is being investigated!) between May and August. There are facilities for special needs and disabled swimmers. Secure gated parking is plentiful and the pool is floodlit after dark. Costs are found here.

I need to learn to swim or I can swim but not very well. What now?
Swimming lessons and Stroke Correction take place just before the Water Aerobics class - 4pm to 5pm every Wednesday. Costs are found here.
